Small Town Mississippi Roots...Rich American History

Newton, Mississippi...A Great Small Town Tour

 

Newton strives to present groups with a fun-filled day of interesting sites and great food on its "Great Small Town Tour."  Tour begins promptly at 9:00 AM and lasts until 3:00 PM Tuesday– Thursday.

 

A two week notice is required for interested groups A minimum of 14 people is required. Twenty or more is preferred. Cost is $15 per person with a 1/2 total amount deposit due two weeks before the tour.  Tour group furnishes transportation. Newton will furnish needed guides.

 

A full lunch is included in the price of the tour, including salad, meat, two veggies, rolls, and dessert.  An afternoon snack will be available during tour; however, group must furnish cost.  Groups canceling members or tour within  72 hours of visit will not receive a refund.

 

 

Secret Garden Art Studio

A working studio for area residents—classes for children and adults – built by Andy Armstrong for his wife Dottie at their retirement as Newton High teachers.  Dottie is the artist who was the force behind the murals in Newton.  Included in the tour is the secret garden and the 100 year old house filled with color and fun art work.

 

 

ROXY

Established in 1934, the Roxy served as the local movie house until 1978. Presently, it houses the Newton Theatre Company and has been the site of numerous productions, including the Sound of Music and Oklahoma!

 

 

Hidden Springs Arabians

This internationally known Arabian horse farm, is nestled on rolling hills right in the city limits of Newton.  Walk through the stables and see the horses put through their paces in the big show arena. Horses bred and trained here continue to win acclaim in horse shows everywhere.

Newton Station Depot and Doolittle Confederate Cemetery

Newton’s Civil War roots run deep. A major Mississippi railroad stop on the way from Meridian to Vicksburg, Union General Benjamin Grierson’s raid on Newton consisted of burning the original depot and destroying the railroad tracks. In 1863, over 1000 soldiers were brought to Newton for medical attention: 100 died. Both sites are listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

 

 

McBeath's Drug Store

McBeath’s on North Main street was first opened in 1922.  Today, as a pharmacy and gift shop, it still features a working 1920’s soda fountain where guests are treated to old-time malts, milkshakes, and floats.

 

La-Z-Boy South

La-Z-Boy South is a furniture manufacturer, and Newton boasts of having the largest facility in Mississippi for the company as well as three supply centers which are the only ones in the country. A walking tour through the plant will show each step in making a La-Z-Boy chair.

 

 

ESCO

ESCO is a steel foundry and a major recycler of scrap metal that produces dragline buckets and teeth for large earth moving equipment.   Our visit is both informative and entertaining.

 

 

Lazy Acres Plantation

Outside of Newton, this Christmas Tree Plantation has seasonal  entertainment for their guests. Hay rides, sled rides, mazes of all kinds, pig races and many other activities provide an enjoyable time for all. Owners Michael and Cathy May are continuing to expand their activities  and services to visitors.

 

 

Nance Hill

Step back into time atop one of the highest points in Newton County. This early 1900 farm house is nestled among moss laden oaks. It’s a peaceful place to relax and watch the world go by.

 

Newton Presbyterian Church

The oldest church building in Newton sits on a hill in front of city hall . The church was established in 1874 and the current building was built in 1905-1906.

Downtown Murals and Colorful Buildings

On a driving tour of our “Great Small Town”,  you will delight  at the  murals on colorful downtown buildings. Enjoy seeing the historic old homes which line the streets.
